Clean Water for All – TAC’s Water and Sanitation Initiative

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet many communities in Agago District struggle with water scarcity and poor sanitation. The Access Centre Uganda (TAC) is tackling this issue head-on with its Water and Sanitation Initiative, aimed at providing safe drinking water and improving hygiene practices.

Bringing Clean Water to Communities

The Water and Sanitation Initiative focuses on installing boreholes, repairing existing water points, and constructing rainwater harvesting systems in the ten sub-counties of Agago District. These efforts are critical in areas where drought and the closure of NGOs have left many communities without reliable water sources.

Success in Adilang Sub-County

In Adilang Sub-County, TAC recently installed a new borehole, providing clean water to over 1,500 residents. Prior to this, villagers had to walk several kilometers to fetch water from contaminated sources, often leading to waterborne diseases. The new borehole has dramatically improved the quality of life, reducing the incidence of illness and saving time that can now be spent on productive activities.

Mary Alanyo, a resident of Adilang, shares her joy: “We used to wake up at dawn to fetch water, and sometimes the water was not safe. Now, we have clean water nearby, and our children are healthier. We are very grateful to TAC for this gift.”

Promoting Hygiene and Sanitation

In addition to providing clean water, TAC’s initiative also focuses on promoting hygiene and sanitation practices. This includes constructing latrines, distributing hygiene kits, and conducting educational workshops on handwashing and proper waste disposal. These efforts are vital in preventing diseases such as typhoid and cholera.

The Challenge of Sustainability

One of the main challenges of the Water and Sanitation Initiative is ensuring the sustainability of water sources. TAC works closely with local communities to establish water user committees responsible for maintaining the boreholes and water points. These committees receive training on maintenance and repair to ensure long-term functionality.
