A Green Future – TAC’s Afforestation Initiative

In response to the severe deforestation and environmental degradation in Northern Uganda, The Access Centre Uganda (TAC) has launched a robust Afforestation Initiative. This program aims to restore the region’s forest cover, combat climate change, and promote sustainable environmental practices within the Agago District.

Planting Trees, Growing Hope

The Afforestation Initiative involves planting native trees on a 10-acre plot in Odom Village, Lapyem Parish, Adilang Sub-County. This area, once barren and prone to soil erosion, is being transformed into a thriving forest, thanks to the collective efforts of the local community and TAC volunteers.

Each year, hundreds of saplings are planted and meticulously cared for by community members. These trees not only help in revitalizing the environment but also provide a source of livelihood. The program includes training locals in sustainable forestry practices, ensuring that the benefits extend beyond environmental restoration.

Community Engagement

One of the core strengths of the Afforestation Initiative is its emphasis on community involvement. Local schools, youth groups, and farmers are actively engaged in tree planting and maintenance activities. Educational workshops on the importance of environmental conservation are regularly conducted, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among the community members.

A remarkable story from this initiative is that of Jane Acayo, a local farmer who has become a passionate advocate for tree planting. Jane has not only planted over 200 trees on her farm but also encourages her neighbors to join the cause. “These trees are our future,” Jane says. “They will bring rain, provide shade, and ensure our children have a better environment to grow up in.”

Challenges and Triumphs

While the initiative has made significant progress, it faces challenges such as limited resources and occasional adverse weather conditions. However, the resilience and determination of the community, supported by TAC’s unwavering commitment, have led to remarkable achievements.
